One of the first things I noticed about the people of Bali was their friendly, broad smiles. They were the kindest, most compassionate people I’ve ever met. You can walk up to a total stranger in Bali, and he’ll treat you like you’re a member of his own family.

The second thing I noticed was how thin they all seemed to be... there just didn’t seem to be any fat people.

Two of the friends I made while visiting the island helped me understand why.

“We don’t like to go to doctors. We don’t need chemicals. For everyone in the fields, we still use herbal medicine. We use the herbs surrounding us. Like for immune health, we use turmeric.”

Ni Wayan Lelir is a fifth-generation herbalist from a long family tradition.

When I went to visit their home in the small town of Ubud in southern Bali, Lelir and her husband showed me their extensive gardens where they grow the turmeric plant.

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry dishes their kick. It’s also used as a traditional remedy.

“This is the turmeric root. This big part is the ‘mother’ root, and these are the ‘babies.’ We use the mother for medicine and the babies for cooking. Why? Because they taste different. And the medicinal properties of the baby roots are less.

“Also, after so long, if we use the mother root for cooking, it will taste like medicine to us!”

Westi has at least six different kinds of turmeric growing in his garden. It’s the single root that they’re most impressed with. And it’s a whole science. They know exactly how old the root is supposed to be and what to mix it with... and it’s central to a lot of the things they do.

I also discovered that turmeric may suppress the growth of fat in your fat cells.

At the time, Lelir told me there are many herbs and plants in Bali that can help with weight reduction... turmeric was just one.

I couldn’t see the end of Westi’s turmeric plants that he grows in his garden near Ubud on the island of Bali.

Later, when I got back to the States, I found supporting evidence from a Tufts University study.

Researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University discovered that curcumin, a phytochemical and a component of turmeric, prevented the growth of fat cells in mice.1

It works the other way, too.

Pancakes have a glycemic index of 67, which is a little on the high side. But take a look at its glycemic load... a belly-aching 39!

When 20 is considered very high, pancakes are off the charts. Pancakes are not sweet and sugary, but they are starchy and very heavy, with a BIG load of carbs.
